How to Apply

Apply using the Common Application. Learn more below about how to apply as a first-year, transfer or international applicant. 

Fee: $55 (Fee waivers are available for first-year students who qualify.) 

Once your Temple University application is on file, submit a portfolio, if required. Be sure to read important information below about the school’s portfolio requirements.

Portfolio submission fee: $10

Admission to Tyler’s degree programs is based on a review of academic credentials as well as a portfolio review, depending on the program.  

Tyler considers the following when reviewing your application.

Portfolios 

Students applying for admission into Tyler’s art education, art therapy, graphic and interactive design, studio art, and visual studies programs must also submit a portfolio. Studio art includes ceramics, fibers and material studies, glass, metals/jewelry/CAD-CAM, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. 

Portfolios are optional for those applying to architecture and environmental design programs. If submitting a portfolio for architecture and environmental design programs, please include any creative or technical work done in the past two years. 

Portfolio Requirements 

Portfolios should consist of 10 to 20 pieces of original artwork, including the following. 

  • Examples of drawing from direct observation regardless of the major you wish to pursue. Examples should show a wide range of values and strong composition. 

  • Work in both black and white and color media 
  • Ceramics, graphic design, fibers, glass, jewelry or metal work, paintings, photography, prints, sculpture, or time-based media 
  • Transfer students should include examples of work completed in college-level studio courses for placement purposes. 

In addition to original artwork, written responses to the following must be included. 

  • Your intended major 

  • A list of art and/or design courses taken in school, pre-college program or community organization 

  • How Tyler can support you in reaching your personal and professional goals 

  • Your process for one of the projects in your portfolio 

  • Who or what influenced you to pursue an education in an art, architecture or built environment discipline 

Applicants who submit a portfolio will automatically be considered for a Portfolio Merit Scholarship. If submitting more than 10 images, only the first 10 will be reviewed for scholarship consideration. 

Application Deadlines

  • Application start: Aug. 1, 2023
  • Application end (fall Early Action): Nov. 1, 2023
  • Application end (fall first-year): Feb. 1, 2024
  • Application end (fall transfer): June 1, 2024
  • Application end (spring): Nov. 1, 2023
