Clinical Education

Simulation Lab

The Nursing Resource Center at Temple’s Health Sciences Center campus is a simulation-based learning environment that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to replicate clinical practice in a safe environment. Nursing students will be able to develop their critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills by participating in real-life situations in a controlled simulated setting with guidance from faculty.

You will be introduced to simulation-based learning during your first nursing course, returning to the simulation lab every semester to participate in a variety of patient and community scenarios that increase in complexity as your nursing knowledge and skill grows.

Clinical Rotations

BSN students complete approximately 800 hours of clinical experience in community and hospital settings.

Nursing clinicals begin in the fall semester of sophomore year. The first clinical is Community Home, a public health immersion experience that exposes students to various population health issues. For five semesters, students return every semester to their assigned community with a focus on community engagement, health education and disease prevention. Examples of neighborhood partners include schools, after-school programs, faith-based organizations, senior citizen centers, outpatient clinics, and other sites serving the underinsured and uninsured.

During the spring semester of sophomore year, hospital-based clinical rotations begin. These clinical rotations include medical-surgical nursing, critical care nursing, psychiatric nursing, obstetrical nursing and pediatric nursing. During the spring semester of senior year, you will complete an internship experience, which involves one-on-one mentoring by a nurse in a care delivery setting of the student’s choice. Our clinical partners include some of the best healthcare facilities in Philadelphia.

The Department of Nursing has more than 100 clinical contracts and 15 affiliate agreements with regional hospitals, as well as multiple community organizations and nonprofits.
