Research Facilities

Temple’s urban setting in the nation’s fourth largest media market makes the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication an ideal center for cutting-edge research and creative work. Academic and artistic exchanges occur across disciplines here, and our talented professors and inquisitive students explore the role of communication in public life.

You’ll be able to work alone, with other students and with faculty on numerous scholarly and creative projects, conducting research, presenting at conferences and submitting to journals. Travel and research funding is available to help support your work.

Carolyn Kitch

Laura H. Carnell Professor of Journalism

Carolyn Kitch has published more than 70 scholarly articles and is on the editorial board of 11 journals. She has authored, co-authored or co-edited five books. Kitsch’s research areas include gender and women’s studies, magazines, media history, public memory, and visual communication.

David Mindich

Chair, Department of Journalism

A former assignment editor for CNN, David Mindich has authored three books and published numerous articles in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine. He is also the founder of Jhistory, a group for journalism historians. Adding an element of practical application to his classes, Mindich brought 26 students to New Hampshire ahead of the 2020 Democratic primary, where they interviewed constituents and met with journalists and politicians.

Andrea Wenzel

Assistant Professor

A former editor, media development consultant and radio producer, Andrea Wenzel is the author of Community-Centered Journalism: Engaging People, Exploring Solutions, and Building Trust. She received the Research Prize for Professional Relevance from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Her research focuses on initiatives to create more connected and inclusive communities and newsrooms through community-centered and reflexive journalism.

Research Funding

In 2016, the National Science Foundation placed Temple University among the top 100 in terms of research expenditures, which amounted to $242 million. Learn more about the university’s research support efforts.
