Master of Education in Art Education

Earn an advanced degree in art education as a schoolteacher or a practicing artist, with an option to pursue Pennsylvania state certification with Temple’s Master of Education in Art Education at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. This 33-credit hour graduate program offers elementary and secondary school teachers the opportunity to hone a specialization in studio art. The program is also beneficial for practicing artists who want to earn teaching credentials through an advanced degree.

The Tyler MEd trains students to teach art at the K–12 level and cultivate arts practices beyond formal educational institutions. The graduate program draws a diverse mix of students interested in the program’s focus on urban communities and rigorous study.

Develop an understanding for a broad range of art learners and build your repertoire of teaching strategies. The intermingling of visual art and education students pursuing complementary goals creates a stimulating synergy in our classes and the emphasis on research and studio practice keeps this NASAD-accredited degree program relevant.

Department faculty are highly accomplished in the field and committed to urban art education and the power of collaborating with communities. Their research interests and projects help graduate students not only learn how to teach art but how to affect positive change in the communities where they work.

Students have access to community arts and art therapy classes and take full advantage of the school’s location in Philadelphia. The city’s rich array of schools, communities, museums, galleries and artists provide robust opportunity for artistic growth, research, networking and jobs.

Pennsylvania Teaching Certification

To earn Pennsylvania state certification to teach kindergarten through grade 12, MEd candidates must complete an additional 18 credits in a professional sequence that includes coursework in educational psychology, education, art education methods, an internship and student teaching in art.

Candidates must also successfully complete two state-required examinations.

Program Format & Curriculum

The MEd in Art Education program comprises coursework in art education, art history and studio art. Students are encouraged to dive deep into their medium and may take as many as three courses in a single studio practice. One course each in art education, contemporary issues and the history of the discipline are required.

Tuition & Fees

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, this Master of Education offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. These tuition costs apply to the 2023–2024 academic year.

Pennsylvania resident: $1,053.00 per credit
Out-of-state: $1,449.00 per credit

Art History Graduate Organization provides a forum for exchange of ideas that enriches the experience of graduate art history students, including events, guest lectures, interaction with alumni, museum trips and peer gatherings that support new students and aid advisors in recruiting prospective students.
American Society of Landscape Architects, Student Chapter at Temple’s Ambler Campus works to advance landscape architecture through advocacy, education and fellowship.

Exposure to diverse cultures, environments and mindsets is essential for art, architecture and design students. At Tyler, you are encouraged to broaden your perspective and explore unique environments through study away programs.

Programs to study in Rome are offered throughout the year.

For a half-century, Temple Rome has been a center for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, where the “Eternal City” is the classroom, the studio and the campus. It offers extensive experiences for art and architecture students, with courses in architecture, art history, drawing, liberal arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
